Two Cleveland Browns players publicly professed their faith in Jesus Christ through baptism during the inaugural "Cleveland for Christ" gathering on June 7, an event that brought together athletes, churches, and members of the local community for a day of worship, prayer, and evangelism.
Linebacker Carson Schwesinger and running back Raheim Sanders were baptized before supporters gathered at the Berea Municipal Pool, where the citywide outreach event was hosted by Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The free event was organized to encourage believers to share their faith and to create opportunities for young athletes and those outside the church to hear the Gospel. With a swimming pool serving as the venue, baptism became one of the most visible expressions of faith throughout the day.
Several Browns players attended the gathering wearing matching "Cleveland for Christ" shirts, demonstrating a growing culture of faith within the organization. Browns chaplain Nobles Darby IV helped lead the event, while fellow players Shedeur Sanders, Taylen Green, Zion Washington, Chris Edmonds, Mason Graham, Daniel Thomas, and Tyson Campbell were also present. Thomas and Campbell participated in leading portions of worship alongside Darby.
For Schwesinger, the baptism marked another chapter in a remarkable story that has already captured the attention of football fans. The former UCLA walk-on rose from relative obscurity to become one of the NFL's most promising young defenders, earning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors last season.
Yet Schwesinger has consistently pointed to a greater purpose than football. Reflecting on his journey to the NFL, he previously explained that God had taught him that his value is not tied to athletic achievement.
"One of the things I learned throughout this process, which is really comforting, is that God does not care how good I am at football," Schwesinger said. "No matter what I do on the field, He's more concerned with how I treat people, the person I am, and how I show Him to others around me."
Sanders has likewise been outspoken about his Christian faith. The former Arkansas and South Carolina standout frequently shares Scripture and messages about God on social media, where his Instagram biography boldly declares, "GOD IS MY ROCK."
News of the baptisms quickly spread throughout Christian circles, drawing praise from evangelist Franklin Graham, who congratulated the players for publicly identifying themselves as followers of Jesus Christ.
The event highlighted a growing trend among professional athletes who are using their platforms not only to showcase their athletic abilities but also to share their faith. For Schwesinger and Sanders, baptism represented a public declaration that their ultimate identity is found not in football, but in Christ.
As preparations continue for the upcoming NFL season, their testimony serves as a reminder that some of the most meaningful moments in an athlete's life occur far away from the stadium lights and scoreboard. On a summer afternoon in Ohio, two Browns teammates stepped into the water and emerged with a public witness to the faith that guides their lives.
