Madonna is finally revealing why the highly anticipated biopic about her extraordinary life never made it to the big screen - and according to the Queen of Pop, it all came down to money, trust, and a major studio fallout.
The 67-year-old music icon has broken her silence on the collapse of the long-discussed project, claiming a disagreement with Universal Studios ultimately derailed what she had spent years developing.
Speaking candidly about the shelved film, Madonna revealed that she poured two years into writing the script, casting actors, and working through budgets with producers. But despite her efforts, the relationship with the studio eventually unraveled.
"I've had an extraordinary life," Madonna explained, insisting that telling her story properly required a substantial budget. The singer argued that her journey from struggling artist to global superstar simply couldn't be squeezed into a smaller production.
According to Madonna, she even found ways to reduce costs by exploring production options overseas. However, she claims the studio wasn't convinced.
The singer suggested that Universal questioned her commitment to filming abroad, a reaction she found frustrating given the deeply personal nature of the project.
Perhaps the biggest heartbreak for fans is that the film had already generated enormous buzz. Emmy-winning actress Julia Garner had reportedly been selected to portray Madonna after a highly competitive audition process, creating excitement across both the music and film worlds.
But the drama didn't end there.
Madonna revealed that after the movie stalled, Netflix approached her about transforming her life story into a television series. Unfortunately, that idea also hit a roadblock because the rights remained tied up with Universal. Madonna claimed regaining control of the project would require paying what she described as an "extortionist's price."
For now, the biopic remains stuck in limbo, leaving fans wondering whether they will ever see Madonna's remarkable story told on screen.
Still, the pop legend isn't dwelling on the disappointment for long.
Madonna is preparing for a major comeback with the release of Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II on July 3. The project serves as a sequel to her beloved 2005 dance-pop classic and marks her first studio album in seven years.
While her movie dreams may be on pause, Madonna is clearly not finished writing new chapters of her story.
