Fans who have been praying for Dolly Parton got an unexpected gift on Wednesday - the country music legend herself.
The grand opening of her new travel stop marked Parton's first public appearance since she canceled her six-show Las Vegas residency due to health concerns. And true to form, she did not arrive quietly.
The 80-year-old showed up in a blue and pink fringed outfit complete with stiletto heels, cut the ribbon with a pair of bedazzled scissors, and sent pink streamers and butterfly-shaped confetti raining over the crowd.
The new destination is Dolly's Tennessean Travel Stop in Cornersville, Tennessee, along Interstate 65 - featuring DLY BBQ, Cup of Ambition coffee (a nod to her hit "9 to 5"), a Doggy Parton dog park, a stage, a tour bus, and plenty of Dolly-themed merchandise.
What made Wednesday even sweeter: earlier promotional materials had said Parton would not be attending. Her surprise arrival left the crowd completely overwhelmed. "We've been worried about her," one fan told the New York Times. Another shared that Dolly is "the first person I pray for every day."
Parton brought her trademark wit to the moment. "I'm sure some of you want to know why I wanted a truck stop," she told the audience. "Well, I couldn't leave it to beavers" - a lighthearted jab at travel stop rival Buc-ee's.
Then she turned sincere: "Whether you are hauling loads, hauling the family, or just passing through, we built this place for you.
Good food, real rest, a little music, and people who are genuinely glad you stopped in - that's what the road has always deserved, and that is what you will find here. Welcome home."
For fans that has kept Dolly in its prayers through the loss of her husband Carl Dean and months away from the spotlight, Wednesday felt like a beautiful answer. She was back, she was laughing, and she was every bit herself.
Welcome home, Dolly.
