Funeral arrangements have now been announced for longtime South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, less than a week after his unexpected death shocked Washington and his home state.

According to Graham's office, the late senator will be honored during a memorial service in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, July 28, before funeral services are held the following day in Pickens County and Columbia, South Carolina. Officials said additional details about the ceremonies will be released in the coming days.

Questions also remain over whether Graham will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. Fellow South Carolina Senator Tim Scott previously revealed that an offer had been extended, though Graham's office did not address the possibility in its latest announcement.

Graham died on July 11 at the age of 71 after suffering an acute aortic dissection, a life-threatening condition in which a tear develops in the inner wall of the body's main artery. Despite emergency medical care, the veteran lawmaker could not be saved.

The news prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues across the political spectrum, with flowers, handwritten notes, and other memorials quickly appearing outside Graham's Senate office on Capitol Hill.

One of the Senate's most recognizable and influential figures, Graham served South Carolina for more than two decades and remained a major voice on national security, judicial appointments, and foreign policy throughout his career.

As Washington and South Carolina prepare to honor his life, many are expected to gather to pay their final respects during next week's memorial and funeral services.
