Colman Domingo is stepping behind the page for his next Disney project. The two-time Oscar nominee is in early talks to co-write an original live-action film centered on Princess Tiana, inspired by Disney's 2009 animated classic "The Princess and the Frog," multiple outlets including Deadline, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed this week.
Domingo will co-write the script alongside Tony-nominated director Robert O'Hara, best known for helming "Slave Play." The two previously collaborated on Domingo's play "Wild with Happy" in 2012. No deals have officially closed, and the project remains in its earliest stages, but Disney is reportedly treating it as a spinoff rather than a direct remake of the original.
Best known as an actor, Domingo has quietly built a decades-long career as a playwright, with Broadway and Tony-nominated writing credits stretching back to the 1990s. The news comes during a milestone year for Domingo, who recently earned two more Emmy nominations and saw his musical biopic "Michael" cross $1 billion at the box office.
Though Domingo has described his outlook as more spiritual than religious, his connection to faith runs deeper than most fans realize - he comes from what he has called "a long line of church reverends," including his own grandfather and several uncles, a heritage he's credited with shaping the way he approaches storytelling and searches for meaning in his work.
Disney has not announced a director or release timeline for the project.
