Fans hoping to reunite with Edgin, Holga, and the rest of the beloved Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves crew may be in for a heartbreaking wait.
Despite years of speculation, co-writer and co-director Jonathan Goldstein has confirmed that a full sequel to the hit 2023 fantasy adventure was actually written. The catch? It may never make it to cinemas.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Goldstein revealed that he and longtime collaborator John Francis Daley were officially hired to write a follow-up, but the project has stalled because of one major obstacle: money.
"We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons. We were hired to write it. I don't know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They're expensive movies to make, but it'd be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like."
The revelation is especially frustrating for fans because Honor Among Thieves was widely praised by both critics and audiences. The film currently boasts an impressive 91% critics' score and a 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many calling it one of the most entertaining fantasy films in years.
Starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis, the movie followed a lovable band of misfits on a magical quest to recover a powerful relic. Its mix of humour, action, and heartfelt storytelling won over viewers-even those unfamiliar with the iconic tabletop game.
Unfortunately, critical acclaim didn't translate into blockbuster profits. The film earned around $205.5 million worldwide against a reported $150 million production budget, making it difficult for Paramount and Hasbro's Entertainment One to justify another expensive instalment.
Even Hugh Grant previously admitted he was baffled by the film's disappointing commercial performance. In a 2024 interview, the actor suggested audiences may have mistakenly assumed they needed to know the game before seeing the movie, questioning whether the studio properly researched public perception before release.
While the sequel remains in limbo, Goldstein and Daley certainly aren't slowing down. The filmmaking duo are preparing to direct the action thriller Renegades and continue developing the next Star Trek movie for Paramount.
For now, the fate of Dungeons & Dragons 2 remains uncertain. The script may already be sitting on a studio shelf, but unless the financial numbers begin to make sense, fans could be left imagining the next adventure instead of watching it unfold on the big screen.
