Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy remains away from training camp as his family navigates the aftermath of a shooting that left his wife, Mia, hospitalized and his son facing felony charges.
A preliminary hearing for 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy has been scheduled for August 31 in Loudoun County, Virginia, following his arrest Sunday night. Elijah is charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He remains held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. If convicted on all three counts, he faces between 10 and 33 years in prison.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, was shot multiple times inside the family's Ashburn townhome and underwent surgery for injuries to her chest and arm. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters Monday that she is in stable condition, calling the update "a plus" as the family continues to process what happened.
Reid, speaking after practice in St. Joseph, Missouri, said Bieniemy has the team's full support during this time away. Pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier is expected to take over Bieniemy's day-to-day responsibilities while there's no set timetable for his return.
