When to See August's Meteor Showers: Dates, Times, and Best Viewing Spots

August delivers one of the best meteor shower windows of the year, and this time stargazers get an added bonus: no bright moon to wash out the view.

The headline event is the Perseid meteor shower, active from mid-July through late August but peaking overnight on August 12 into the predawn hours of August 13. Under normal conditions the Perseids can produce up to 100 meteors per hour, and 2026 offers close to ideal viewing since the peak lines up almost exactly with a new moon, leaving skies completely dark. The best window is after 11 p.m. local time, with activity building steadily until dawn. The Perseids are visible worldwide but favor the Northern Hemisphere, where the shower's radiant point climbs highest overhead in the hours before sunrise.

Adding to the excitement, August 12 also brings a total solar eclipse crossing parts of Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, meaning viewers along that path could witness a rare same-day double feature: an eclipsed sun by afternoon and a meteor shower after dark. Two smaller showers are also worth knowing about. The Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids peaked together on the night of July 30-31, favoring Southern Hemisphere and low-latitude viewers, though a nearly full moon limited visibility this year. Later in the month, the Kappa Cygnids reach their peak around August 17, offering occasional bright fireballs for Northern Hemisphere skywatchers as a smaller follow-up act to the Perseids.

For the best experience anywhere in the world, get away from city lights, give your eyes about 30 minutes to adjust to the dark, and look up at the widest possible stretch of open sky rather than any single point. No telescope or binoculars needed.
