Two of 2026's biggest films are now colliding at the box office charts, and both share the same two lead stars.
Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," starring Matt Damon as Odysseus with Tom Holland and Zendaya in supporting roles, opened July 17 to a record-breaking $124.5 million domestic weekend, the biggest global debut of Nolan's career at $264.1 million worldwide. Within six days, the film had already crossed $1 billion worldwide, making it the second-fastest movie in history to hit that mark.
That means "Brand New Day" reached a billion-dollar global total in less time than "The Odyssey" needed to approach it after more than two weeks of release, a gap that shows just how differently these two box office giants are built. Nolan's film has leaned on word-of-mouth and a historically slow decline, dropping only 27% in its second weekend when most tentpoles fall by half. Sony's film leaned on pure opening-weekend force, with Holland's fourth solo outing as Spider-Man landing a 90% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and an "A" CinemaScore.
Beyond the numbers, "Brand New Day" has drawn attention from faith-based film critics for what's under the spectacle. Catholic News Agency and Catholic Times both highlighted the film's themes of identity, isolation, and quiet redemption, as Peter Parker fights to hold onto who he is in a world that no longer remembers him.
Both films remain in wide release, and with "The Odyssey" still expanding into China and "Brand New Day" holding steady through August, the final tally in this two-movie showdown is still being written.
