When the Texas metalcore outfit first emerged, frontman Ryan Kirby openly embraced the "Christian band" label, while making it clear the group was never intended to be a worship act. He argued that their darker lyrical themes reflected the brokenness of the world and pointed listeners toward hope rather than despair.
Over the years, however, Kirby's public comments have reflected a more personal and nuanced approach to faith.
He has spoken candidly about how years of touring reshaped his views of the institutional church, saying some of the harshest criticism he experienced came from churchgoers rather than people outside Christianity. The theatrical moment accompanies lyrics that sharply criticize organized religion and what frontman Chris "Motionless" Cerulli sees as religious hypocrisy.
Cerulli has repeatedly voiced strong criticism of religion in interviews, arguing that it has often been used to justify harmful actions and social division. His views are also reflected in the band's music, which frequently challenges religious institutions and their influence.
