The family of missionary Elisabeth-Jane Ross has spoken publicly for the first time since her death in Athens, describing the 38-year-old as a woman whose life was defined by service to others.
In a statement released this week, Ross's family said: "Lisa will always be remembered by us as kind, principled and selfless. Her integrity was absolute, and she dedicated her life to helping others in need." The family added that they are "in deep pain" and asked for time and privacy as they come to terms with their loss.
Ross, known to loved ones as Lisa, had spent two decades as a member of City on a Hill church in Edinburgh before traveling to Athens in late June to volunteer with a refugee support organization. Her body was discovered inside a suitcase in a derelict building in the city's Kypseli district on July 18. Sharif Ahmadzai, a 26-year-old boxer who has lived legally in Greece for a decade, has been charged with homicide with intent - the Greek equivalent of a murder charge - along with robbery and weapons violations. He was remanded in custody following a court appearance this week and exercised his right to remain silent.
Beyond her family, Ross's faith community has also stepped forward to honor her memory. One tribute described her as someone who "truly incarnated the love and passion of Jesus" through the way she gave herself to refugee ministry, even in a foreign country far from home.
As the legal case against Ahmadzai continues, with further hearings expected as evidence is compiled, those who knew Ross say her legacy is not the manner of her death but the quiet, consistent way she lived - leaving comfort behind to serve people in crisis. Her story continues to serve as a call for the Christian community to hold up in prayer those who serve in vulnerable places around the world.
