Could the Fugees really be preparing to make their first new album in 30 years? Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean just gave fans the answer they've been waiting decades to hear: "Absolutely."
Speaking to the BBC ahead of Hill's Diaspora Calling! concert at the Milton Keynes National Bowl in the U.K. on Friday (Aug. 7), Hill and Jean opened up about their repaired relationship - and the possibility of finally following up the Fugees' landmark 1996 album, The Score.
When asked whether new music could be coming, Hill didn't hesitate.
"Absolutely," she replied.
Jean sounded equally optimistic, revealing that he and Hill are now in an "amazing place."
"All I can tell you is, man, we're in God's hands," Jean said before singing, "I'm back with my bandmate!" He added that "the energy is very important."
That's a remarkable turnaround considering the famously complicated history between the two. Hill described what has happened between them as an "incredible healing process," suggesting that some of the personal tensions that followed the Fugees' breakup may finally have been put to rest.
And talk of new Fugees music isn't coming completely out of nowhere.
Earlier this year, Jean revealed that there is still unreleased material sitting in the vault from The Score era, including outtakes and freestyles. He said conversations had already taken place about potentially letting fans hear some of that material as part of the album's anniversary celebrations.
The timing couldn't be more fitting. The Score turned 30 this year, three decades after transforming the Fugees into global superstars with classics including "Killing Me Softly," "Fu-Gee-La" and "Ready or Not." The album topped the Billboard 200 and later won Best Rap Album at the 1997 Grammy Awards.
Getting an actual Fugees reunion album together, however, would be complicated. Third member Pras Michel is currently serving a 14-year federal prison sentence following his conviction on charges connected to a foreign influence scheme.
Hill and Jean, meanwhile, have become increasingly comfortable sharing a stage again. Jean joined Hill and her son YG Marley at Coachella in 2024, and the former bandmates reunited again during the 2026 Grammy Awards for a tribute honoring Roberta Flack and D'Angelo.
The Fugees have teased fans with reunions before, only for old tensions and other circumstances to derail the momentum. But this time, Hill isn't merely reminiscing about the past.
Asked whether there could be new music, she said "Absolutely."
Thirty years after The Score, that one word may be enough to get Fugees fans very excited.
