Drake's latest viral moment has a deeper backstory than most people realize.
The rapper hosted his third annual "Strong Women, Stronger Drinks" dinner this week at Toronto's historic Casa Loma, an exclusive, all-black-dress-code affair that quickly went viral for his generosity - giving away more than $1 million in cash and luxury prizes. Ten attendees walked away with $50,000 each, while six more received $100,000 apiece to support their businesses and causes. Multiple guests also found brand-new luxury cars, including a 2026 Mercedes-Maybach, waiting outside with bows on the hood, along with designer Birkin bags.
But the event's origin traces back nearly two decades, to a networking gathering Drake attended in 2007 that stuck with him ever since. That event, "What Women Want," was created by Shannae Ingleton, founder of the agency Kensington Grey, as a space for women to connect and celebrate one another's success.
Addressing his own guests, Drake explained the impression it left on him: "It was essentially women gathering to network, to socialize and to be a man at the event, you had to work. I always loved that aspect of it. We would show up and work the event because that's what the event was about."
Rather than making a brief celebrity appearance, Drake reportedly spent much of the night personally interacting with attendees, mingling and handing out gifts throughout the evening. He designed the dinner to bring together changemakers from different industries, creating a space for ambitious women at every stage of their journey to network and build real connections.
Nearly 20 years after one woman's vision shaped how he sees generosity, Drake is now the one passing it forward - one dinner, and one dream, at a time.
