Country music has lost one of its most enduring figures - a woman whose life spanned more than a century and whose hands shaped hundreds of instruments and generations of Ozark musical tradition.
Violet Brumley Hensley, the Arkansas luthier and fiddler known nationally as the "Whittlin' Fiddler," died in August 2026 at the age of 109. Hensley, widely recognized as Arkansas' oldest living country music legend, passed away on August 7. A beloved fixture at Silver Dollar City for decades, she was celebrated as much for her craftsmanship as her music.
Born in Mount Ida, Arkansas, in 1916, Hensley learned to carve and play fiddles from her father and went on to hand-build roughly 75 instruments over her lifetime. Her talent earned her a 1970 feature in National Geographic, appearances on "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "Captain Kangaroo," and induction into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame at age 101 in 2018. She made her Grand Ole Opry debut at 99.
The town of Leslie, Arkansas, which had honored her with a "Violet Hensley Day" and the Key to the City in 2025, remembered her online: "Today, it is with great sadness that we share the passing of Ms. Violet Hensley, a true Arkansas legend." The tribute called her "an honorary member of the Leslie community" who "embodied the traditions, craftsmanship, and spirit" of the Ozarks.
Hensley's passing comes in the same week country music said goodbye to another beloved figure - producer and pedal steel guitarist Tommy Detamore, who died August 5 at age 70. Detamore's wife, Sandra, announced his passing with words rooted in her own faith, writing that he had "gone home to be with the Lord." He was remembered by friends as "a life long Christian man" whose devotion to his church matched his decades of studio craftsmanship.
Two very different careers - one built from Ozark whittling knives, the other from Nashville session rooms - now remembered together in a single, difficult week for the genre.
