Cory Asbury's return to worship music continues to unfold one single at a time.
The GRAMMY-nominated artist released "My Closest Friend" this week, the newest offering from his forthcoming album "Outsing the Angels," set for release September 18. Asbury shared the news with fans in a simple, personal message on social media: "And after all this time... My Closest Friend is out."
The track was written by Asbury alongside Ran Jackson, Ricky Jackson, and Paul Duncan - the same songwriting team behind the album's title track and second single, "Holy God." That single, released in June, carried the message "A song about Jesus. Not us. Him," reflecting the tone Asbury has struck throughout this new chapter.
"My Closest Friend" marks the third single from "Outsing the Angels," Asbury's first full worship project in five years after what he's described as a season of disconnection and wandering from his calling. Asbury has said the turning point came through an honest conversation with fellow artist Forrest Frank, who redirected him back toward the ministry he'd stepped away from.
Asbury spent years as an intern at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City before joining New Life Church in Colorado Springs and eventually signing with Bethel Music in 2015, where his 2018 single "Reckless Love" became one of the most streamed worship songs of the decade.
With "Outsing the Angels" just weeks away, "My Closest Friend" gives fans another glimpse of an artist who, by his own account, has found his way back to the only voice he ever wanted to sing for.
