Bill Maher may have gotten the laugh he wanted with his first Ariana Grande joke - but the second one clearly did not land the same way.
During Friday's episode of Real Time With Bill Maher, the comedian took aim at Grande's appearance while joking about a newly released batch of UFO files, comparing one reported sighting to the pop superstar.
Maher told the audience that the files included reports of "a stick-like figure with large eyes," before quipping that it was "just an Ariana Grande video."
The crowd laughed and applauded.
Then Maher pushed it further.
"Please, we kid. We kid. Maybe that joke will make her eat something," he added.
That line was met with audible groans from the studio audience, instantly turning what had been a crowd-pleasing bit into a noticeably uncomfortable moment.
And the timing could hardly be more sensitive.
Just days earlier, Grande's representative confirmed that the singer and actress plans to take a "step back from visibility" after completing her Eternal Sunshine Tour, citing the relentless public scrutiny surrounding her.
Her rep said Grande wants to finish the tour "healthily and happily" before taking what was described as a much-deserved break from public-facing appearances.
Grande then personally addressed the announcement during a Chicago concert, making it clear that the decision had been made well in advance and was not an impulsive response to any one controversy.
"Sometimes when a story comes out that's not directly from me, things can get a little blown out of proportion," Grande told fans.
She described the planned hiatus as coming from a "thoughtful and empowered place."
That context makes Maher's joke particularly loaded, given the years of public commentary and speculation surrounding Grande's appearance.
Grande has repeatedly found herself at the center of conversations about her body, health and weight, despite previously asking people to be more careful about commenting on others' appearances.
Maher, meanwhile, appeared to recognize immediately that he had crossed into shakier territory, quickly falling back on the classic "we kid" defense.
But the audience reaction told its own story.
The first joke got applause.
The second got groans.
And with Grande preparing to step away from the glare of celebrity scrutiny, Maher may have unintentionally demonstrated exactly the kind of public commentary she is reportedly trying to escape.
