Three weeks after Elizabeth "Liz" Waddell disappeared while swimming off Grenada's Grand Anse Beach, her husband says drowning now appears to be the most likely explanation - though he still can't make sense of how it happened.
In a new update posted to FindLiz.com, Cailen Waddell shared previously unreleased witness accounts: two jet skiers reported speaking with a woman believed to be his wife around 5:30 p.m. on July 22, several hours after she was last seen on Airbnb surveillance footage entering the water near a jetty. The jet skiers told the family they spent five to ten minutes trying to convince her to come in, warning her the ocean wasn't safe to stay in alone. "Reportedly she said, 'I'm a good swimmer,' and gave them a thumbs up," Cailen wrote.
Despite the new timeline, Cailen said the family has found no answers for why Liz, an experienced swimmer, would have ventured that far from shore. The family reviewed her journals, texts, emails, and browsing history and found no indication she intended to harm herself - only entries about her future and her growth. "If Liz swam out there, in my heart I believe something happened that made her not act rationally," he wrote. "The Liz I love, and have known for 23 years, would not swim where she swam."
Search teams using drones, dive units, and K9s covered the coastline, Mount Harmon National Park, and surrounding areas without success. Waddell's family has since left Grenada, though the Royal Grenada Police Force says the case remains an active missing person investigation.
Back in Cary, the prayers haven't stopped. Teresa Peron, owner of Vintage Vogue and a longtime friend of Waddell's, said the community continues holding onto hope for her safe return - a hope her family says they're not ready to let go of either.
