ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard is facing a health issue that has already forced the band to cancel a major concert, with no timeline yet for his return.
The Texas blues-rock trio scrapped its August 5 performance at the Hollywood Bowl, citing what frontman Billy Gibbons called "insurmountable obstacles" in a statement posted to the band's social media. "Friends, fans and followers of ZZ Top are the best in the business and the band is counting on everyone to bear with us for this brief interruption," Gibbons added. Sources close to the band later confirmed to TMZ and Rolling Stone that Beard's health was behind the cancellation, though no diagnosis has been made public.
Drummer Michael Monahan has stepped in behind the kit for ZZ Top's remaining tour dates, continuing alongside Gibbons and bassist Elwood Francis.
This marks the third time in under two years that health concerns have pulled the 76-year-old Beard off the road. He stepped away in March 2025 for an undisclosed procedure, returned that June, then missed most of August 2025 with a separate issue before rejoining the band in September. Beard has anchored ZZ Top's rhythm section since 1969, co-writing hits like "Legs," "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Tush."
As with his previous absences, fans have wasted no time turning to prayer. During Beard's earlier health scares, well-wishes like "prayers for a successful surgery and a full recovery" flooded the band's social pages - a pattern already repeating as news of this latest setback spreads. For a band built on 55 years of loyalty between its members and its audience, that instinct to pray first says as much about ZZ Top's fanbase as any chart record could.
