Selena Gomez isn't backing down. Two days after investors filed a $1.2 million fraud lawsuit against her mental health startup Wondermind, her attorney issued a sharp public denial.
"The allegations that Selena Gomez engaged in any way whatsoever in any purported 'fraud' or other wrongdoing are completely meritless, both factually and legally," attorney Mathew S. Rosengart said in a statement Saturday. "We will vigorously defend these false allegations and indeed are filing a motion to dismiss the baseless claims against her."
The lawsuit, filed Aug. 13 in Delaware federal court by two investment entities, alleges plaintiffs put nearly $1.2 million into Wondermind believing promised partnerships with major financial firms and a planned mobile app were already underway. The suit claims those commitments "did not exist" and that the company struggled quietly for years before investors learned the truth. Gomez, her mother and co-founder Mandy Teefey, and former co-founder Daniella Pierson are all named as defendants; Pierson has also publicly denied wrongdoing and says she'll present financial records in her defense.
Wondermind launched in 2021 as a mental health media company aimed at making emotional wellbeing resources more accessible - a mission Gomez has tied closely to her own well-documented journey with anxiety and depression, one she's often described as inseparable from her faith. "I wanted to hear what God wants me to say," she told Apple Music's Zane Lowe in a past interview about going public with her mental health struggles, crediting her relationship with God as central to getting through her lowest points.
No trial date has been set. Gomez and her legal team say the motion to dismiss will move forward in the coming weeks.
