Sandra Bullock says caring for longtime partner Bryan Randall through his private battle with ALS taught her a hard truth about caregiving: "they are left alone."
Speaking on the SmartLess podcast, the 62-year-old actress described coordinating Randall's care almost entirely in secret, at his request, while also raising their two children. "I wasn't allowed to tell anybody," Bullock said. "My sister was the only one who knew for a while." During the COVID-19 pandemic, she said she was left to quietly track down in-home nurses on her own, without the support network most caregivers rely on.
Reflecting on the experience, Bullock said it reshaped how she sees anyone in a caregiving role. "The understanding that I now have of caregiving, for those who are in the caregiving position, they are left alone," she said.
Randall, a photographer, died on August 5, 2023, at age 57 after a three-year battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
