King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who became the world's youngest reigning monarch at just three years old, has died at 34. Tooro Kingdom's Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki confirmed the king passed away around 10 p.m. local time on Aug. 27, calling it an "immeasurable loss." No official cause of death has been released, though reports indicate he had been receiving medical treatment in the United States for a critical illness.
Oyo ascended the throne of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda in 1995 after the sudden death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. A regency governed on his behalf until he formally took the crown in a 2010 coronation, making him a fixture of Ugandan cultural life for nearly his entire lifetime and a symbol to a generation that had known no other king.
As tributes poured in from across the kingdom's nine counties, Bishop Reuben Kisembo of the Rwenzori Diocese remembered Oyo's Christian faith directly. "Our King has been a Christian and was cognizant of the fact that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords," Kisembo said, urging the Tooro people to turn to God for strength during their mourning. The bishop pointed to Jesus' words in John 11 - "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live" - as comfort for the grieving royal family and kingdom.
Oyo studied Business Management at the University of Winchester in the U.K. and was known for championing sports and youth programs throughout his reign. He is survived by his mother, Queen Best Kemigisa, and a son who will carry on the Tooro crown.
