Olivia Rodrigo closed out her inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival Saturday night with a moment years in the making: a duet of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" alongside Stevie Nicks herself.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Stevie Nicks!" Rodrigo announced to the crowd at Irvine, California's Great Park, as Nicks walked out hand-in-hand with her. Backed by Nicks' longtime guitarist Waddy Wachtel on acoustic guitar, the two traded verses before harmonizing on the chorus, dancing together under the lights.
Nicks later told the crowd Rodrigo reminded her of herself "a hundred years ago," adding she was "somewhat awestruck" that the 23-year-old had pulled off an entire festival with such grace. For Rodrigo, the moment closed a loop - she's said in past interviews that watching Nicks perform "Landslide" as a teenager changed how she thought about songwriting.
The duet capped a headlining set that also brought out Sarah McLachlan for "Building a Mystery" and "Angel" - the latter dedicated to country legend Dolly Parton, who died last week - and Alanis Morissette for "Ironic," filling in for Karen O, who had to step back for a family matter.
As previously reported, Daisy Chain Fields raised $20 million for organizations supporting women and girls, after Melinda French Gates matched Rodrigo's initial $10 million pledge onstage.
Parton, honored in McLachlan's tribute, was famously open throughout her career about her Christian faith and her belief that music was a gift meant to be shared - a fitting undertone for a night built around passing something on to the next generation.
