New Details Emerge In Jim Thornton’s Shocking "Wheel Of Fortune" Suspension

The mystery surrounding Jim Thornton's sudden disappearance from Wheel of Fortune has taken a disturbing-and highly unexpected-turn.

The longtime announcer was reportedly suspended after another passenger photographed his screen during an American Airlines flight and claimed he was viewing a support chat room associated with people experiencing pedophilic thoughts. The discovery reportedly alarmed the passenger enough to alert airline staff, setting off a chain of events that ended with law enforcement waiting for Thornton when the plane landed at Los Angeles International Airport.

According to reports, the May 14 drama unfolded aboard American Airlines Flight 1276 from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Los Angeles. Photographs allegedly taken by the passenger were later published by TMZ, while authorities questioned Thornton after his arrival.

Thornton was not arrested or charged with any crime. His lawyer, Allison Hart, insists the television personality had visited the website entirely by accident while searching for suicide-prevention resources.

Hart said Thornton became involved in suicide-prevention advocacy after losing a close family member to suicide two years ago. According to the attorney, an acquaintance working in that field directed him to a website with a name similar to legitimate suicide-prevention platforms he had previously visited.

Thornton allegedly did not realize the true nature of the forum until after opening it.

"When my client understood what the website was about, he left the page and has not visited since," Hart said in a letter obtained by Page Six. She emphasized that the website itself was legal and maintained that Thornton has never viewed, downloaded or consumed illegal child sexual abuse material.

The attorney also claimed that officers spoke with Thornton for fewer than five minutes before determining that no crime had occurred and allowing him to leave.

Sony Pictures Television, however, is not brushing the controversy aside. The studio confirmed that Thornton has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune while it conducts what it described as a "thorough investigation." Even more ominously for the veteran broadcaster, Sony revealed that it is already recasting the announcer's role.

Thornton has supplied the booming voice of Wheel of Fortune since 2011, succeeding the late Charlie O'Donnell. He worked alongside Pat Sajak and Vanna White before Ryan Seacrest assumed hosting duties following Sajak's retirement. Thornton has also announced Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and contributed voice work to productions including Monsters, Inc., The Cleveland Show and Celebrity Deathmatch.

Despite his suspension, Thornton's voice may still be heard temporarily because episodes were recorded before the controversy erupted. One prerecorded installment featuring him reportedly aired after Sony announced its investigation.

The unanswered question is whether Thornton's explanation will satisfy the studio-or whether one alarming glimpse of his laptop screen has already ended his 15-year run on television's most famous wheel. For now, he remains uncharged and firmly denies wrongdoing, but Sony's decision to begin recasting suggests the show is preparing for life without its familiar announcer.
