Savannah Guthrie is back behind the Today anchor desk after a two-week break - and this time, the reason had nothing to do with the ongoing search for her mother.
The NBC anchor returned to Studio 1A on Tuesday, September 8, following the Labor Day weekend, joining co-anchor Craig Melvin for the show's first episode of the new week. "Look who's back," Melvin said as she took her seat. "Savannah Guthrie, we missed you!"
Guthrie leaned into the back-to-school spirit sweeping the broadcast, joking, "It's back to school week. I'm bringing you a shiny new apple at 7:30am." Melvin played along, pointing to her highlighter on set.
Guthrie had been off the air since August 24, with NBC News' Kristen Welker and Weekend Today's Laura Jarrett filling in during her absence. She didn't state a specific reason for the break, but her comments suggested it centered on her children, Vale and Charley, starting the new school year. During her time off, Guthrie made a rare public appearance at the U.S. Open with her husband, Mike Feldman, and taped an episode of NBC's Password.
The seven-month search for Guthrie's mother, Nancy, who went missing from her Tucson, Arizona, home in February, remains active, with no suspect publicly named. Through it all, the Guthrie family has continued to lean on prayer, with Savannah repeatedly thanking supporters for holding them "in their hearts."
Even in an ordinary week off, Guthrie's return is a small reminder that behind the anchor desk is a mother still walking through an extraordinary trial - one she and her family continue to face with visible faith.
