A new theory is circulating online in the seven-month-old search for Nancy Guthrie - but investigators say it doesn't hold up.
The claim originated from a YouTuber known as 857Tucson, who compared a police appeal out of Yuma, Arizona, to the unsolved Guthrie case. Yuma police are seeking a man who smashed through a glass door during a commercial break-in between August 23 and 24, causing roughly $1,000 in damage. The YouTuber pointed to the suspect's gloves, claiming they matched the "same style" worn by the masked individual seen in doorbell footage the night Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson-area home.
The comparison spread quickly, reigniting online speculation and copycat fears nearly seven months into the case. But neither Yuma police nor Pima County investigators have linked the two incidents - and the details don't match as cleanly as the viral claim suggests. The individual in the Guthrie footage wore thick black gloves; the Yuma suspect is pictured wearing red ones.
It isn't the first time glove evidence has fueled false hope in this case. Early in the investigation, 16 gloves were recovered near Guthrie's home, including one that underwent FBI DNA testing - only to be traced back to a restaurant worker with no connection to the disappearance.
Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of "Today" co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since February 1. No suspect has been named, and a reward of more than $1.2 million remains active.
As with previous online leads in this case, readers are encouraged to treat unverified claims with caution until authorities confirm them. Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
