Victory House Worship is looking beyond today's troubles toward the ultimate hope of the Christian faith with its new single, "Returning," available now on all major streaming platforms.
The worship ministry of Victory Church in Atlanta describes the song as a declaration of longing, expectation and confidence in the promised return of Jesus Christ. Following "Rapha," which proclaimed that God remains a healer, the group's latest release turns from present healing to the future arrival of the King.
"The earth is groaning for redemption / Creation reaches for her King," Victory House Worship sings before delivering the song's central declaration: "He who was and is / And is returning."
"Returning" grew out of Victory Church's year-long sermon series through the book of Revelation. Its lyrics draw upon biblical images found in Revelation, Matthew, Romans and Philippians: creation groaning for redemption, the Church preparing as a bride, lamps burning, the trumpet sounding and every tongue confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord.
For producer and songwriter Sean Hill, the song emerged through listening to the spiritual life of the congregation rather than merely searching for another worship release.
"The longer I write music for our church, the more I realize that writing songs our church loves to sing is more about listening than writing-listening to what our church is saying, teaching, praying, and believing," Hill explains.
"The best thing I can do is put a melody to what our church is already longing to sing. 'Returning' is the result of that kind of listening. After walking through the book of Revelation for a year as a church, this song became our natural response to what we saw and learned in Scripture."
That response reaches its clearest expression in the chorus:
"Come, Jesus come
Let heaven open wide
As glory floods the skies
Come, Jesus come
With fire in Your eyes
Returning for Your bride."
As the music intensifies, "Returning" contrasts the humility of Christ's first coming with the majesty of his promised return. The one who came as the Lamb will return as the Lion, while every knee bows and every tongue acknowledges his worthiness.
Victory House Worship says the reaction was immediate when the congregation first sang those words across Victory Church's Atlanta campuses. After spending a year studying Revelation together, worshipers reportedly erupted as the new song gave voice to the hope they had encountered in Scripture.
The message carries particular significance at Victory Church, a multicultural congregation representing more than 140 nations. That diversity reflects Revelation 7's vision of a multitude drawn from every nation, tribe, people and language worshiping before the throne and the Lamb.
The song reaches its climax with an urgent prayer:
"King of kings, Lord of lords
Shake the earth with Your coming
Take Your throne, take Your place
We await Your returning."
At a time when worship music frequently emphasizes personal struggles and immediate breakthroughs, "Returning" deliberately recovers a theme that once stood at the center of the Church's worship: Christ will come again.
Victory House Worship hopes the song will prevent that promise from becoming distant or abstract and restore the return of Jesus to the vocabulary of contemporary worship.
Jesus came. Jesus reigns. And Jesus is returning.
