Barrera played Sam in 2022's Scream and 2023's Scream VI. She was dismissed from the seventh film in November 2023 after social media posts about the war in Gaza. At the time, producer Spyglass Media Group said it had "zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate." Barrera disputes the way the company characterized her, saying its leadership labeled her as something she is not and never apologized.
Her latest remarks draw a sharp line between the films she enjoyed making and the people responsible for her exit. Barrera said she loved the franchise, but an apology from its current rights holder would not persuade her to return. She did, however, leave open the possibility of revisiting Scream if its rights passed to a company she believed would better honor creator Wes Craven's legacy.
