The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards ended with two stars holding different versions of the night's biggest prize. Taylor Swift won Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia," while Madonna took Artist of the Year after opening the ceremony with her first VMAs performance in 23 years. Madonna also won Best Album for Confessions II. The final results give Swift the top video award, but Madonna the broadest collection of wins.
Swift added Best Direction for "Opalite" and received MTV's inaugural Artist Director honor. The special award made her the most awarded artist in VMAs history, moving her past Beyoncé. Her Video of the Year victory gave that record setting night a competitive centerpiece: viewers saw her recognized for her work behind the camera and for the video itself.
Madonna's results told a different story. Alongside Artist of the Year and Best Album, she shared Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for "Bring Your Love." Confessions II - The Film also won Best Dance, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography and Best Long Form Video, bringing Madonna's total to seven wins on the published results list. She had opened the Los Angeles show with Carpenter, Charli XCX and a series of surprise celebrity cameos.
Accepting Artist of the Year, Madonna looked back to her "Like a Virgin" performance at the first VMAs in 1984. She recalled being told afterward that her career was over. The remark gave her victory a striking full circle quality: more than four decades after that warning, she was back on MTV's stage, performing new music and collecting one of its biggest awards.
BTS had a major night of its own. The group won Song of the Year and Best K-Pop for "SWIM," as well as Best Group. Sienna Spiro took Best New Artist, LISA won Best Pop for "Dream feat. Kentaro Sakaguchi," and Cardi B and Kehlani won Best Hip-Hop for "Safe." Those results spread the awards across established names and newer performers, even as Swift and Madonna commanded the largest headlines.
The ceremony also made room for remembrance. Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear accepted Nirvana's Video Vanguard Award and honored Kurt Cobain. Kacey Musgraves performed "I Will Always Love You" in tribute to Dolly Parton. Their appearances gave the show moments beyond its closely watched awards races.

Swift left with Video of the Year and a new VMAs record; Madonna left with Artist of the Year, seven wins and a comeback performance that brought her history with MTV into the present.
