Trina Braxton Mourns the Death of Husband Von Scales As Family Shares Heartbreaking Announcement

Trina Braxton is mourning the death of her husband, Von Scales, at 58. A representative for the Braxton family confirmed the news on Thursday, October 1, asking for prayers and privacy as the family grieves.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Von Scales, beloved husband of Trina Braxton," the representative told TMZ. Sources close to the family told the outlet that Scales died around 2 a.m. Thursday in Atlanta and had been battling heart-related problems. A cause of death has not been confirmed.

The loss comes nearly seven years after Braxton and Scales married on December 15, 2019, in St. Louis. Their ceremony brought together her sisters Toni, Tamar, Towanda and Traci, along with their brother Michael Jr. and mother Evelyn, for a celebration filmed for Braxton Family Values. Judge Mablean Ephriam officiated the wedding at Windows on Washington.

Their relationship began with an introduction through mutual friends, rather than a television romance. In a 2019 interview with Essence, Braxton recalled meeting Scales at former football player Jamie Dukes' home. A group outing for dinner and a movie followed, and two days later, the pair went out on their own. As their relationship developed, frequent phone conversations helped bridge the distance between them.

"He's just such a great conversationalist and I just enjoyed talking to him," Braxton told Essence. She described missing their conversations when they did not speak-a realization that helped her recognize how deeply she was falling for him. Scales later proposed during a family gathering in Napa Valley, choosing a moment when her sisters were together.

Scales also shared a complicated period of grief with Braxton after her former husband, Gabriel "Gabe" Solis, died in December 2018. Although that marriage had ended, Braxton explained that she and Solis remained close friends. She spoke candidly about the difficulty of mourning a former spouse while building another relationship, describing how Scales came to respect the important place Solis held in her family's life.

Those earlier reflections now offer a personal glimpse of the companionship behind the couple's public appearances. Braxton had described a relationship built through conversation, shared company and the challenges of bringing their lives together. With his death now confirmed, the family's immediate request is for supporters to keep them in their prayers and give them space to grieve.
