Demi Moore nearly lost the role that launched her career. According to St. Elmo's Fire co-writer Carl Kurlander, director Joel Schumacher was ready to offer the part of Jules to Madonna before Moore earned a second chance.
Kurlander told the "Reality Life" podcast with Kate Casey that, about two weeks before filming, the costume designer called Schumacher to say Moore had arrived "drunk and high" at a fitting. Kurlander said Schumacher had recently met Madonna, believed she would become a huge star, and was prepared to cast her. The deal, as Kurlander recalled it, was that Moore had about 10 days to get herself together.
Kurlander said Moore began attending AA meetings and worked with a sober companion. She kept the role of Jules Van Patten, and the 1985 film became her breakout. Entertainment Weekly says it asked Moore's representatives for comment, and I found no response in reports reviewed.
She has spoken openly about this chapter. In the 2024 documentary Brats, she said Schumacher "stuck his neck out" for her and that the studio "could have easily just found someone else." She has also written about her struggles with addiction in her 2019 memoir, Inside Out.
The story is less about a lost role than about grace. One person took a chance on someone who was struggling, and that chance changed a career and, by Moore's account, her life.
Moore later became an Oscar-nominated actress for The Substance in 2024.
