Journey Drummer Deen Castronovo Hospitalized After Two Songs—Band’s Prayer Plea Leaves Questions

Journey's Thursday night concert took an alarming turn just two songs into the performance when drummer Deen Castronovo suffered a medical emergency and was helped offstage. The band had opened with "Be Good to Yourself" and "Stone in Love" at Tulsa's BOK Center on October 8 before the interruption prompted keyboardist Jonathan Cain to ask the audience for prayers.

"Have your prayers ready. Have your prayers ready for Deen Castronovo, everybody," Cain told the crowd. His appeal came as the musicians waited to learn whether the interruption would be temporary, with the concert paused and their bandmate's immediate situation still developing.

Guitarist Neal Schon subsequently returned to tell fans that Castronovo was being transported to a hospital. Journey continued the concert with longtime drum technician Steve Toomey taking over, an unexpected substitution that allowed the evening's performance to resume. The musicians later credited Toomey with saving the night.

The band offered encouraging words, but the nature of the emergency remained undisclosed in the latest reports reviewed. Schon dedicated the concert to Castronovo and expressed optimism about his recovery; those remarks offered reassurance without establishing a diagnosis, confirming his discharge, or explaining when he might return.

Singer Arnel Pineda also tried to reassure the audience, saying, "He's gonna be fine. Too much Gatorade," according to reporting cited by Page Six. That comment should not be treated as a medical explanation: the report did not provide a confirmed cause for the hospitalization.

The immediate question is whether Castronovo will be ready for Journey's next scheduled performance. The group is due at San Antonio's Frost Bank Center on Saturday, October 10, but Friday's reporting did not establish whether he would play. His recovery and availability remain the key developments to watch as the Final Frontier Tour continues.

For the Tulsa audience, the night moved abruptly from familiar rock anthems to a public appeal for prayer, followed by an emergency replacement behind the drums. Journey completed the performance, but the most consequential update still concerns Castronovo himself: what happened, how he is recovering, and when he can safely return to the stage.
