There is no new break in the Nancy Guthrie case today, and two stories trending online need context. The 84-year-old mother of "Today" co-anchor Savannah Guthrie remains missing more than eight months after she was abducted from her Tucson home, and no suspect has been named. jubileecast
The hair sample. Headlines say a mixed hair sample was sent to an FBI laboratory, but officials stress it is not newly discovered DNA evidence. An FBI official said the sample was collected in February and that the bureau requested it more than two months earlier. The FBI's Phoenix office later said all hair had been resolved and does not point to a suspect, and Sheriff Chris Nanos said the hair had no DNA on it. A mixed DNA sample from the home remains the only known biological evidence, and it has not been linked to a suspect.
The Vail death. The Pima County Sheriff's Department released a statement on a "Vail Death Investigation" on Oct. 9, but Men's Journal noted it isn't directly connected to the Guthrie case.
What has happened recently. A sheriff's spokesperson said the Sept. 30 arrest of a man once briefly detained in the case is unrelated. A former FBI agent said four ransom emails she received in April were scams, and the FBI told her the bitcoin address did not match notes investigators consider potentially legitimate. The Sheriff's Department has urged anyone receiving messages about the case to report them and not send money or personal information.
The Guthrie family continues to ask for prayers. JubileeCast joins them in praying for Nancy's safe return.
