"Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl," a new documentary about the King of Pop's 1993 halftime show, will premiere in February 2027 on Hulu and ESPN. An exact release date has not been announced.
The film is directed and produced by Bao Nguyen, who made The Greatest Night in Pop. It promises never-before-seen footage of Jackson and his team preparing for the Super Bowl XXVII halftime show on Jan. 31, 1993, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Its official synopsis says the show helped turn halftime into "the single biggest spectacle in pop culture." The film is produced by Skydance Sports, Optimum Productions and Into the Deep End Films, with NFL Films executives among the executive producers.
That night, the Dallas Cowboys beat the Buffalo Bills 52-17. Jackson was the only halftime performer. He opened with a medley of "Jam," "Billie Jean" and "Black or White." The finale brought a choir of more than 3,500 children to the stage for "Heal the World." The performance is widely credited with changing how the NFL approaches halftime.
The announcement comes as Super Bowl LXI approaches on Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The NFL has not yet announced who will perform at this year's halftime show.
The 1993 show ended not with a dance hit but with a song about caring for children and the world, sung with thousands of kids. Decades later, that finale is what many viewers remember most.
