Christian singer-songwriter Howard Gripp has released "When I Was a Kid," a heartfelt new single featuring Benjy Gaither. Blending Americana rock with personal storytelling, the song reflects on the lasting influence of a mother's faith and the journey of rediscovering Jesus after years of drifting away.

Co-written by Gripp and songwriter-producer Billy Smiley, the track draws from Gripp's own life. Growing up in a small Midwestern town, he was introduced to Christianity by his mother, who sang in the church choir, played the pipe organ, and shared Bible stories with him. The foundation she established during his childhood would later become an important part of his return to faith.

As he grew older, Gripp gradually moved away from the beliefs he had grown up with while pursuing music and navigating personal challenges. Following years of performing with rock bands, he eventually settled into family life and an information technology career. However, a difficult period marked by divorce and depression brought him to a turning point.

At 46, after a suicide attempt, Gripp found himself in the parking lot of a small church, searching for answers. That moment became part of a life-changing return to the faith his mother had nurtured in him years earlier.

"When I Was a Kid" traces this journey from childhood Bible stories to the struggles of adulthood and the rediscovery of a relationship with Jesus. More than a reflection on the past, the song expresses gratitude for a mother's enduring love and the spiritual seeds planted early in life.

Featuring Gaither, the single pairs reflective lyrics with an Americana rock sound rooted in Gripp's musical background. Smiley, known for his work with WhiteHeart and The Union of Sinners and Saints, produced the track, helping bring its themes of perseverance, grace, and redemption to the forefront.

The single also previews Gripp's forthcoming album, Welcome To Your Life, expected in spring 2027. Recorded in Franklin, Tennessee, at Castle Studio and Peter Frampton's Studio Phenix, the project was produced by Smiley and mixed by Billy Whittington, whose credits include work with Vince Gill, Michael W. Smith, and Amy Grant.

Drawing on decades of experience, the upcoming album will explore struggles, addiction, second chances, and the transforming power of God's grace through acoustic rock, heartland rock, and faith-centered songwriting.

Gripp continues to perform across the United States and Canada at churches, festivals, theaters, county fairs, and community events, sharing music shaped by his personal experiences and renewed faith.

"When I Was a Kid," featuring Benjy Gaither, is available now on digital streaming platforms through NRT Music.
