Montreal-based blues and gospel singer Hagiel, also known as Analoga, is turning deeply personal experiences into songs of resilience, faith, and self-discovery with her debut EP, I Am Enough of a Woman. The six-track project arrives alongside her powerful new single, "Fight for Your Life," a song inspired by her determination to overcome difficult seasons and reclaim her freedom.
Born in a small French village near Quebec City, Hagiel brings together blues, rock, gospel, and influences from her Caribbean and African roots, complemented by her French-Canadian background. Her distinctive musical identity has also been shaped by years of performing with Montreal's celebrated People's Gospel Choir.
"Fight for Your Life," co-written and produced by award-winning songwriter Mark Zubek, reflects one of the most challenging periods of Hagiel's life. Drawing from experiences involving illness, violence, and repeated interruptions to her creative pursuits, the singer transforms her struggles into an encouraging message about perseverance and holding on to one's dreams.
The song's hopeful perspective is echoed throughout the EP, particularly in its reminder that dreams are not necessarily lost when life's circumstances force them to pause.
The project's title track, "I Am Enough of a Woman," also carries a deeply personal story. Written following the end of a toxic relationship in 2003, the song reflects Hagiel's journey toward healing, independence, and rediscovering her sense of self. What initially began as a project titled "What's Left of Me" eventually took its present name after songwriter Marc Bélanger recognized the strength of one of its central lyrics.
Faith is another important thread throughout the collection. "Praise Your Way Out," a gospel-inspired track, was written while Hagiel was hospitalized after listening to a testimony by Dr. Juanita Bynum. The song later reached the semifinals of the 2024 Unsigned Only competition in the Christian category. It had also earned semifinal recognition in the 2020 International Songwriting Competition.
Other songs highlight different dimensions of Hagiel's musical journey. "Survivors" celebrates perseverance, while "Turned Around Me" brings a groove-driven romantic perspective. The EP also features "Born to Rock Like No Morrison," co-written with composer Vincent Xavier St-Laurent and inspired by a childhood photograph of Montreal rocker Jonas.
Hagiel's musical career dates back to 2009, with notable experiences that include performing with the People's Gospel Choir of Montreal, contributing backing vocals to Nadja's Christmas album, and singing at the Bell Centre on a song for New Kids on the Block's Joey McIntyre. In 2014, Gregory Charles selected her as a choir vocalist for several Mondial Loto-Québec performances. She was also among 140 singers selected from more than 5,000 applicants for the blind auditions of Quebec's La Voix in 2012.
Through I Am Enough of a Woman, Hagiel brings together years of musical growth and personal reflection in a collection centered on survival, identity, freedom, and faith. Led by "Fight for Your Life," the debut EP offers an honest introduction to an artist determined to keep pursuing her calling despite life's hardest battles.
