Tyler Perry's legal battle with actor Mario Rodriguez has opened another front: whether private messages exchanged with the filmmaker's associates should become public. Perry, who denies Rodriguez's sexual assault allegations, says he has already provided the texts during litigation but wants their confidentiality preserved.
In its October 29 report, TMZ cited court documents in which Perry argues that some conversations contain financial information and involve associates with no connection to the allegations. He maintains that the messages were supplied under a previous confidentiality agreement and that disclosure would subject those individuals to unnecessary embarrassment. Rodriguez had not filed a response to that issue at the time of the report.
The distinction matters: the reported dispute concerns public disclosure of material already exchanged in the case. The reporting does not establish that these messages substantiate-or undermine-Rodriguez's allegations.
Rodriguez, who appeared in Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween, filed his lawsuit in December 2025, seeking at least $77 million. He alleges unwanted sexual contact during encounters at Perry's home and claims Perry gave him money after multiple incidents. His claims include sexual assault, sexual battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Perry rejects that account. His lawyers contend that Rodriguez sought financial assistance over several years and fabricated allegations after that support ended. Rodriguez has disputed the suggestion that his continued contact with Perry discredits his accusations, saying cordial messages and requests for help can reflect vulnerability and unequal power. These remain competing accounts.
Meanwhile, a separate development has changed the lawsuit's scope. MyNewsLA reported on October 29 that Judge Brock T. Hammond had dismissed Lionsgate as a defendant the previous week. Rodriguez's lawyers are seeking reconsideration and have asked the judge to delay signing a judgment in the studio's favour until that request can be heard. A hearing on the requested delay was scheduled for October 30.
That ruling concerns the claims against Lionsgate; it does not resolve the allegations against Perry. As the proceedings continue, the immediate questions concern the boundaries of confidentiality and whether Rodriguez can persuade the court to reconsider the studio's dismissal.
