Oscar-nominated actress Barbara Barrie died with medical assistance at her Manhattan home on October 28, just three weeks after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, according to reports and her daughter, Jane Harnick. The actress was 95.
Now, Harnick is sharing details of the farewell-including the revelation that the family discussed Barrie's death and memorial arrangements together beforehand.
"We were planning her death and her memorial at the same time and she was fine with it," Harnick told Page Six. Her daughter said Barrie had supported medical aid in dying long before her diagnosis.
In a separate interview published by PEOPLE on October 30, Harnick recalled an ordinary morning amid extraordinary circumstances: her mother reading The New York Times in bed while talking with family. According to Harnick, Barrie spent her final day at home with those closest to her.
Barrie's agent, Gary Gersh, confirmed to NBC News that her death was medically assisted under New York's Medical Aid in Dying law, which the actress had publicly supported. Her family's account places her longstanding position on assisted dying alongside the personal circumstances of her terminal illness.
Barrie's career extended across film, television, and Broadway. She earned an Academy Award nomination for Breaking Away, a Tony nomination for Company, and the Cannes best actress award for One Potato, Two Potato. Television audiences also knew her from Suddenly Susan.
Her daughter's interviews add a deeply personal account to the announcement of her death: a family preparing for a farewell while still sharing conversation and familiar daily routines.
