An Ohio pastor's public introduction of his second wife has drawn a sharply different account from his stepdaughter, who says the celebration conceals a troubling family history.
Kourtney Jones appeared on the All Things Theology podcast on October 28, challenging how LifeWorks Church pastor Israel Ford and her mother, Lydia Ford, have presented their relationship with Shakayla Ford. According to Christian news outlet ChurchLeaders, Jones alleged that another woman had been involved sexually with the couple years before their current arrangement.
Jones has also alleged that Israel sexually abused her for years. Israel and Lydia Ford denied her sexual abuse allegations in a statement to entertainment news outlet The Shade Room. The allegations have not been independently established in the reporting reviewed.
The controversy began spreading widely after an October 25 video showed Lydia introducing Shakayla to the congregation as her "sister in marriage." Israel said he and Shakayla had been married for three years. The three have publicly defended their arrangement through their interpretation of Scripture.
But Jones' interview raises a further question: how had the congregation been prepared for that announcement?
According to ChurchLeaders' account of the podcast, Jones said Israel began teaching that polygyny was biblical in early 2025. She believes those sermons helped prepare members to accept his own arrangement. She also alleged that some congregants had begun practising it themselves.
Her account requires an important distinction: Jones said she had already stopped attending the church and had not heard those sermons firsthand. Her description of the congregation's reaction relied on what others told her.
She said some people were disturbed and that hired musicians ended their association with the church. Those claims suggest the applause captured in the viral clip may not reflect every response to Ford's teaching. They remain Jones' account of events, rather than an independently verified picture of congregational opinion.
For Jones, the online jokes have also obscured the seriousness of what she is alleging. She has urged viewers to consider the women involved and to hear accounts beyond the family's public presentation.
The developing story now places two issues before the public: Ford's defence of multiple wives and the separate allegations concerning his conduct. Evaluating either requires more than a viral church clip-and the abuse allegations warrant scrutiny on their own terms.
