The Kendrick Brothers' new film Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul opened in theaters October 16, and early reviews are mixed. Here is what parents and church groups should know before buying tickets.
The film is set in Rio de Janeiro and follows Noah Silva, a smooth-talking used-car salesman whose "do whatever it takes" approach to business and life unravels at home and at work. He begins a difficult personal journey to restore his integrity and win back his wife and son. His dishonest business practices include cheating his pastor.
It reimagines the Kendricks' 2003 debut Flywheel, filmed in Brazil with a Portuguese-speaking cast. The original was made with about $20,000 from Sherwood Baptist Church, and grossed only $37,000 in theaters, yet it helped launch the brothers' career.
The film is rated PG for some thematic elements and runs about 110 minutes. Plugged In called it a sincere remake with no content issues to worry about. Check your theater's listing to see whether your showing is dubbed or subtitled, since the cast is Brazilian.
Reception is sharply divided. Many reviewers find the Kendricks' sincerity intact but the execution dated or awkward. On Rotten Tomatoes, one reviewer praised it as a simple conversion story, while another called it a disappointing step backward for faith-based film. Audience reactions so far are warmer.
If you enjoy the Kendricks' straightforward message that faith can change a life, this one delivers it. If you want polished, modern storytelling, you may find it uneven.
