Taylor Swift wanted an answer before committing to Toy Story 5: would her involvement cost another songwriter an opportunity?
Speaking alongside director Andrew Stanton at a November 1 screening and Q&A, Swift recalled repeatedly checking whether the filmmakers had approached someone else while her Eras Tour commitments delayed discussions.
"I don't want to kick somebody off of this project," she recalled telling the team, according to Billboard. Her concern places a question about professional courtesy at the centre of one of the year's biggest soundtrack collaborations.
Stanton's account offers an answer. He said Swift was his sole choice for a new original end-credits song. When she was unavailable, he decided against approaching another artist and was prepared to proceed without that track. According to his explanation, no substitute songwriter had been recruited and then displaced.
The distinction matters because Toy Story already has an established musical identity through Randy Newman. Swift's arrival raised questions about that legacy, but her specific concern involved whether someone had received the assignment during her absence. Stanton described the change in musical direction as a decision he had made early in the film's development.
The resulting song, "I Knew It, I Knew You," was written and produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff. Disney announced it in June, describing its connection to Jessie's story and its return to elements of Swift's country sound. The single arrived June 5, ahead of the film's June 19 theatrical release.
Swift's recollection draws attention to a consequential detail behind a major celebrity collaboration: whether the opportunity remained open, and whose work might be affected when a superstar finally said yes.
