Pistoris Sentence Reveals and Updates: Incident Means he is Unlikely to Compete again as he Gets Five Years
Pistoris was going to leave a legacy like no other. Having survived a birth defect that had led to the amputation of his legs at the age of only eleven months Pistorius had forged through life to become South Africa's icon. Not only did Pistorius manage to walk again but he managed to create a name for himself in the racing community. Managing to prove that his lack of legs was not a barrier, Pistorius ran on his prosthetics and achieved a time that allowed him to race against able bodied runners at the 2012 London Olympics; a race that he won and walked away with the gold medal. Shock and awe were just some of the reactions from the racing committee who claimed that he won due to unfair added advantage. However, this was sorted propelling Pistorius into a world of celebrity status and lucrative signings such as Oakley and Nike.
This was all before he decided to shoot his girlfriend in their bathroom early last year over Valentines. In seconds he shifted from role model to wild raged killer. During the trial his defense lawyer Barry Roux struggled to salvage that Pistorius's hero image claiming that he was indeed sorry and remorseful. This was a response to claims that in a case that was dramatic and quite sad Pistorius had shown little or no emotion throughout the proceedings.
Judge Thokozile Masipa, passed her ruling, "Count one, culpable homicide, the sentence imposed is five years" and an additional three year suspension for a separate gun charge. Masipa worries that a lesser sentence would give the impression that there is a law governing the rich and famous and another governing the poor and disadvantaged. The sentence is bound to draw uproar from its people. Interviewed on the streets some South Africans stated that it is very unfair explaining that if it was someone else the sentencing would be different.
