CCM Artists Call for Reform Amid Allegations Against Michael Tait: “Secrecy Always Destroys”

Following serious allegations against Michael Tait, former frontman of Newsboys and DC Talk, respected voices in Contemporary Christian Music (CCM)-including Rhett Walker, Mike Donehey, Matt Hammitt, and songwriter Benji Cowart-are speaking out with a unified call for reform, accountability, and cultural change within the Christian music industry.
Rhett Walker, in a widely shared Instagram post, stated:
"Secrecy always destroys. It's time to tear down the walls protecting sin and start protecting the people instead... This is not about cancel culture. This is about Christ-like culture-one that protects the vulnerable, tells the truth, and rebuilds trust with integrity."
Mike Donehey (formerly of Tenth Avenue North) added:
"When we prioritize image over integrity, we create an environment where abuse can flourish. It's time for a cultural shift."
Matt Hammitt (formerly of Sanctus Real) echoed:
"We must stand with those who have been hurt and ensure that our industry becomes a place of safety and healing."
As these artists call for systemic reform, Benji Cowart, a veteran Christian songwriter, pushed back against the wave of opportunistic criticism directed at CCM itself:
"The 'hate on CCM' conversation is low-brow, easy target conversation... it's that old joke that that one guy keeps telling like he's the first to ever tell it... Move on brother... move on."
This statement, which has since gone viral, reframes the current moment: the issue isn't the existence of Christian music-but the need to address the structures that protect abusers and silence survivors.
The outcry follows a June 4 exposé by The Roys Report, detailing allegations of sexual misconduct and substance abuse by Michael Tait. In response, artists are calling for the Christian music industry-record labels, management teams, and platforms-to adopt clearer accountability standards, support survivors, and foster a more transparent culture rooted in gospel values.
