A 20-year-old University of Alabama student from Elmhurst, Illinois is missing in Barcelona, Spain after getting separated from his friends during a spring break trip - and investigators now suspect foul play was involved in his disappearance.

James Paul "Jimmy" Gracey was last seen around 3 a.m. on March 17 near the Shôko nightclub on Barceloneta beach. Two days later, his father is in Spain searching for him. His mother is on her way. And his family is taking it, in their own words, minute by minute.

What Happened the Night He Disappeared

Gracey had flown into Barcelona just hours before he vanished, arriving from Amsterdam where he had spent the previous weekend. He was in the Spanish city visiting friends who are studying abroad.

Cavin McLay, the president of Alabama's Theta Chi fraternity and a close friend who made the trip with Gracey, told Fox News Digital that the group got separated from Gracey inside Shôko toward the end of the night. That was the last time anyone in his group heard from him. Gracey never made it back to his Airbnb in Ronda de Sant Pere - located roughly two miles from the nightclub.

At the time he was last seen, Gracey was wearing a white shirt, dark pants, and a chain with a gold rhinestone cross. He is described as the eldest of five children and is known among his fraternity brothers for mentoring younger members and giving back to others. McLay described him as the chapter's chaplain and philanthropy chairman.

What Investigators Have Found So Far

Barcelona law enforcement recovered Gracey's phone during the arrest of a separate individual. Investigators are now reviewing its recent location history in an attempt to trace his movements after he left the nightclub.

His family told reporters they are still unclear whether the phone was lost or stolen. "We don't know whether it was lost, stolen, whatever," his aunt Beth O'Reilly said.

Investigators have also reviewed video footage purportedly showing Gracey leaving Shôko with an unidentified person. That footage is part of what has led authorities to suspect foul play. No suspects or persons of interest have been publicly named. A police aquatic unit searched waters near the nightclub on Wednesday but found nothing.

Gracey is also believed to have spoken with a brown-haired American woman inside the club around the time he was last seen, though it remains unclear whether she was the person seen leaving with him.

His Family Is Asking for Help

Gracey's aunt O'Reilly described him as wonderful and a loving son, and said the family is doing everything they can to get his face seen. "We're doing the best we can, taking it minute by minute," she said. "If they know anything, they'll bring it to the authorities."

His mother Therese Gracey first posted about his disappearance on Facebook, asking anyone with information to come forward. His church has since launched a four-day rosary prayer campaign for his safe return. jubileecast His father Taras is already on the ground in Barcelona. Gracey had a return flight to the United States booked for Saturday.

The University of Alabama has confirmed it is in contact with the family. The U.S. State Department said it stands ready to provide consular assistance and is working with authorities on the ground.

A Painful Pattern That Keeps Repeating

Many following the case have drawn comparisons to the 2024 disappearance of Riley Strain, a Missouri college student who went missing after a night out and was later found drowned in a Tennessee river. jubileecast Others have pointed to the 2025 case of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student who vanished during a spring break trip to the Dominican Republic and was never found.

Each of these cases has involved a young person separated from a group during a night out, in an unfamiliar city, late at night. The pattern is not a coincidence. It is a warning.

For the Christian community watching Jimmy Gracey's story unfold, the response has already begun in the most personal way possible - with prayer. His church's four-day rosary campaign is a quiet but powerful reminder that when the worst happens, faith communities do not wait for answers before showing up.

Jimmy Gracey is still missing. If you have any information, contact Barcelona authorities or the U.S. Embassy in Spain.

This is a developing story. JubileeCast will update as information becomes available.
