Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, marking a dramatic escalation in the long-running fallout from revelations tied to Jeffrey Epstein.

Thames Valley Police confirmed Thursday that "a man in his sixties from Norfolk" was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation. Authorities did not name him in their official statement, citing national guidance, but multiple UK media outlets identified the arrested individual as Mountbatten-Windsor.

Police said the man remains in custody and that searches are being conducted at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk.

So why was he arrested?

What Is the Allegation?

According to police and prior reporting, investigators have been reviewing claims that Mountbatten-Windsor may have committed misconduct while serving as the United Kingdom's trade envoy.

Among the allegations under review:

  • Claims that he shared sensitive information with Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as trade envoy.

  • Allegations tied to claims in newly surfaced Epstein files.

  • Assertions that a woman was trafficked to the UK to have a sexual encounter with him - allegations he has previously denied.

Authorities have emphasized that the arrest relates specifically to suspicion of "misconduct in public office," a criminal offense under UK law involving the abuse of a public position.

Police have not announced formal charges.

Where Did the Arrest Take Place?

Officers reportedly arrived at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where Mountbatten-Windsor had recently relocated. The move followed his removal from Royal Lodge in Windsor after King Charles III stripped him of his royal title in October amid renewed scrutiny connected to Epstein-related disclosures.

Unmarked police vehicles and plain-clothes officers were seen at the property Thursday morning, according to British media.

Searches are also being carried out at a separate address in Berkshire.

Broader Investigation Underway

Thames Valley Police previously confirmed they were assessing material connected to Epstein files that raised questions about Mountbatten-Windsor's conduct.

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said authorities had opened an investigation following a "thorough assessment" and emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the inquiry.

Other police forces, including the Metropolitan Police and the National Crime Agency, are also reported to be reviewing related matters.

Officials have cautioned that the case is now active and urged restraint in public commentary to avoid prejudicing proceedings.

A Significant Moment for the Royal Family

The arrest represents one of the most serious legal developments involving a senior member of the British royal family in modern history.

Mountbatten-Windsor has previously denied allegations of sexual misconduct linked to Epstein and settled a civil lawsuit in the United States in 2022 without admitting liability.

As of February 19, 2026, he remains in custody while investigations continue.

Authorities have not announced whether charges will follow.
