A Southern Baptist Convention-affiliated church in Virginia is facing intense scrutiny after reports surfaced that one of its campus directors was previously convicted of a statutory sexual offense involving a minor.
According to published court records and reporting by ChurchLeaders.com, Joshua Bowen-currently serving as campus director of the Orange campus of Mountain View Community Church-was convicted in 2005 in North Carolina of a second-degree statutory sexual offense. The conviction stemmed from a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student at a school where Bowen was employed as a teacher. Bowen was approximately 24 years old at the time of the offense.
Under a plea agreement, Bowen received a prison sentence of 48 to 67 months, with credit for time served. Additional related charges were dismissed as part of the agreement.
Bowen now holds a visible leadership role at Mountain View Community Church, a multi-site congregation affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). Reports indicate his responsibilities include pastoral leadership functions. Questions are mounting over whether his criminal history was disclosed to the congregation and how church leadership evaluated his suitability for ministry.
The controversy lands at a sensitive time for the SBC, which has faced years of national criticism over its handling of sexual abuse cases within affiliated churches. In recent convention actions, SBC leaders have affirmed that individuals convicted of sexual abuse offenses should not serve in positions involving minors. The denomination has also debated the implementation of a database to track credibly accused or convicted abusers, though enforcement and oversight mechanisms remain limited due to the SBC's autonomous church structure.
Advocates for abuse prevention argue that transparency and proactive safeguarding policies are essential to rebuilding trust in churches nationwide. The case is likely to intensify ongoing conversations about redemption, accountability, and the standards required for pastoral leadership.
As of this release, Mountain View Community Church has not issued a detailed public response addressing the reports.
Further developments will be reported as they become available.
