In a historic moment for Morehouse College, the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel has unveiled an official portrait honoring Bishop O.C. Allen III, recognizing his leadership in ministry and community engagement.

Allen, senior pastor of Vision Cathedral of Atlanta, is believed to be the first openly gay bishop to receive such recognition within the Chapel-one of the most sacred and symbolically significant spaces on campus, closely associated with the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr..

The honor reflects Allen's longstanding commitment to faith, justice, and public service. In addition to his pastoral work, he serves on the board of the Human Rights Campaign and was appointed by Barack Obama to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS.

A former student of the Morehouse School of Religion, Allen has previously made history at the institution as the first openly gay minister inducted into its Board of Preachers.

The portrait unveiling coincided with Allen's participation in the March 19, 2026 Bayard Rustin Crown Forum panel, "Black Queer Images As Sacred Archive." During the discussion, Allen encouraged students to view leadership as a communal responsibility rather than an individual pursuit.

"Leadership is not an individual act," Allen shared during the forum. "It extends beyond the self and into the community."

Named for civil rights strategist Bayard Rustin, the Crown Forum continues to serve as a platform for dialogue on faith, justice, and identity.

The recognition of Bishop Allen marks a notable moment in Morehouse College's ongoing engagement with issues of faith, leadership, and inclusion, further expanding the legacy of its historic chapel as a space where theology and social transformation intersect.
