The NBA world woke up to heartbreaking news on Tuesday. Brandon Clarke, power forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, has died at just 29 years old. The Grizzlies, his agency, and the NBA all confirmed the news on May 12, 2026 - sending shockwaves through the entire basketball community.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 medical emergency call shortly after 5 PM Monday at a home in the San Fernando Valley. When paramedics arrived, Clarke was declared dead. Drug paraphernalia was found at the scene, and authorities are investigating his death as a possible overdose. An official cause of death is pending autopsy results.

Who was Brandon Clarke?

Clarke was a 7-year NBA veteran who spent his entire professional career with the Memphis Grizzlies after being selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, he starred at Gonzaga University - a Jesuit Catholic institution known for its strong values-driven athletic culture - before entering the league. In his only season with the Zags, he averaged 16.9 points per game and led the team to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

As a rookie in 2019-20, Clarke made the All-Rookie First Team and averaged 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Over 309 career games, he averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds. Injuries plagued his final seasons, and he played in only two games during the 2025-26 season due to a calf injury. Despite the struggles on the court, everyone who knew him remembered something far more important - his character.

How the world is responding

"He was the gentlest soul who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family."

- Priority Sports, Clarke's agency

"Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit."

- NBA Commissioner Adam Silver

"Everything he went through... he still came in with a smile on his face and was a light in the locker room - truly an inspiring person."

- Grizzlies teammate Jaylen Wells

Gonzaga head coach Mark Few also released a statement, calling Clarke "one of the most easygoing players we have ever had" and remembering "the great smile he had on his face whenever you were around him." The National Basketball Players Association called his passing "an incredible loss for the brotherhood."

Clarke was shaped in part by Gonzaga - a school built on Jesuit Catholic values of service, community, and seeing God in all things. The outpouring of love from every corner of the basketball world is a reminder of the eternal impact a life of kindness and character can leave behind. In moments like these, we are called to hold each other closer and remember that every life is precious.

An investigation is still ongoing, and no official cause of death has been confirmed. Clarke is survived by his mother, Whitney, and his family. JubileeCast extends our deepest condolences to all who loved him. Rest in peace, BC.
