Sainte Jane's new single, "I Will Rest (In Your Sovereign Arms)," arrives as a deeply personal reflection on faith, suffering, and learning to trust God in the middle of life's storms. Blending heartfelt Americana storytelling with worship-driven honesty, the husband-and-wife duo transform years of waiting, heartbreak, and unanswered prayers into a song that feels both intimate and universal.
Written during what they describe as their own "eight-year storm," the track carries the tension of grief and hope at the same time, echoing the disciples' fear in Mark 4 while pointing listeners back to the steady presence of Christ.
With rich harmonies, vulnerable lyricism, and a growing ministry that stretches from major festival stages to leading worship at Church of the Apostles, Sainte Jane continue carving out a unique space where storytelling and spiritual honesty meet. In this interview, Lauren and Jeremy open up about infertility, faith, worship, and the deeper story behind the song.
Q: "I Will Rest (In Your Sovereign Arms)" carries both peace and tension at the same time. Can you share the personal journey and experiences that inspired this song?
We have unfortunately battled infertility for many years. We know what it is to live in an extended season of waiting and the pain of unfulfilled longings. Within that battle, we each had separate experiences where we were introduced to Rembrandt's "Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee". Lauren was in a women's bible study, and I was in a seminary course. We were amazed when we shared our stories with one another. Around that same time, we were in a Doctor's office and on the wall was a different painting of a boat in a storm. We knew the Lord was with us and reminding us that He was with us.
In Mark 4, the Disciples and Jesus are in a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee when a terrible storm comes upon them. Fearful of drowning, the disciples find Jesus asleep. They wake him and ask, "don't you care that we are dying!". He calms the storm and rebukes them for their little faith. I like to think that rebuke is more of a response question; "don't you know me and don't you trust me?" The paintings were a reminder to us that we can rest in the boat through the storms that rage around us, because Jesus is with us.
Q: Sainte Jane blends Americana, worship, and heartfelt storytelling in a unique way. How would you describe the artistic identity and mission behind your music?
Our mission is simple; to tell the truth. Honest and vulnerable music can be an agent of healing in people's lives. We want our music to be like the folks who tore open the roof to lower their sick friend to the feet of Jesus.
Artistically, our identity flows out of our backgrounds. Lauren performed as a country artist for years before we married, while I was the frontman of a pop/rock band. Together our music takes on her propensity for story-filled songwriting and my guitar driven musical sensibilities. Harmony is one of our favorite things. We love tight passionate harmonies!
Q: You mentioned the song was written during an "eight-year storm." How did walking through hardship together as a married couple shape both the lyrics and the emotional honesty of this release?
We wrote the song sitting on our back porch one fall afternoon. Like most evenings, we spent that one together. We faced this hardship together. This trial has strengthened our marriage in ways we couldn't imagine. Not only did we lean into Jesus but leaned into one another. The irony of the hardship is that, for us, the gift of the strength of our marriage has come through this trial.
We don't get to pick the trials that come our way. God is sovereign and God is good. He is kind even amid overwhelming pain and sorrow. Nothing that has happened to us has been a surprise to Him and so even the gift of our marriage was the gift of comfort through this difficult season.
Q: Your music reflects themes of trust, surrender, and faith in uncertainty. What do you hope listeners who are struggling personally will take away from this single?
That in your personal trials you can trust Jesus. He is with you. He loves you. He has not abandoned you. He has promised to never leave you nor forsake you. He will be with you all the way to the end. He is your refuge and strength an ever-present help in times of trouble. He may not remove the trial. He may not answer prayers the way we want, but that does not change His love for you or His presence with you.
Q: From performing at festivals like SXSW and the 30A Songwriters Festival to serving as worship leaders at Church of the Apostles, how have live ministry and performance experiences influenced your songwriting?
We have a quote from pastor Eugene Peterson on our mantle at home that says "Worship is the strategy by which we interrupt our preoccupation with ourselves and attend to the presence of God."
As performing artists, our shows were about us, our songs, what we could do, how "talented" we were. However, as servants in God's church leading others in worship, nothing is about us, but all points to Christ and his beautiful and finished work! Leading worship was a new adventure for us. It was both humbling and exciting. Worship is not about performance, but about invitation. Leading people to the feet of Jesus.
Many of our songs for the church now take on that same intentionality. We just want to tell the truth about Jesus and invite people to come to him to be healed. It's as simple as that.
Q: Looking ahead beyond "I Will Rest (In Your Sovereign Arms)," what can listeners expect next from Sainte Jane in terms of future music, upcoming releases, or new creative directions?
Wow! There's so much on the horizon! Most immediately we are releasing a song a month until the release of our new EP coming in September. The next song comes out in June and is the story of Jeremy's grandparents and their 65 years together. We've got a few shows and retreats sprinkled in with a bunch of events with our church. We're also finishing up tracking for a Christmas EP expected for release this November. Be on the lookout each month for a new song!
