This week marks the anniversary of the first national conference hosted by The Gospel Coalition, the influential evangelical network founded by theologian D. A. Carson and late pastor Tim Keller that would go on to shape a generation of Reformed evangelical ministry, publishing, and church leadership.

The inaugural two-day gathering was held on May 23-24, 2007, at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. The event brought together pastors, theologians, ministry leaders, and church planters united around a shared commitment to historic evangelical theology and gospel-centered ministry.

The conference featured a lineup of prominent evangelical voices, including John Piper, Ray Ortlund Jr., Graham Cole, and Mark Driscoll. However, one of the defining moments of the event came through a keynote address delivered by Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan and one of the most influential evangelical thinkers of the modern era.

Preaching from the New Testament book of 1 Peter, Keller emphasized the all-encompassing nature of the Gospel message and its implications for every sphere of life.

"The Gospel creates a worldview," Keller said during the address. "The Gospel is the basis for a worldview that actually touches every area of life. The way you do business, the way you do art. The way you conduct your family life."

He continued with what would later become one of his most frequently quoted theological statements:

"The Gospel is not the ABCs of Christianity, it's the A-Z. It's not just the elementary introductory truth and then we get past that ... the Gospel is what drives everything that we do."

Founded in the early 2000s by Carson and Keller, The Gospel Coalition began as a pastors' colloquium before rapidly expanding into one of the most prominent evangelical media and ministry platforms in the world. Through articles, podcasts, conferences, videos, theological resources, and church leadership initiatives, TGC became especially influential within the Reformed evangelical movement.

The organization describes its mission as being "deeply committed to renewing our faith in the gospel of Christ and to reforming our ministry practices to conform fully to the Scriptures."

Over the years, TGC has hosted major national conferences featuring leading pastors, theologians, authors, and worship leaders, while also navigating leadership transitions and cultural debates within evangelicalism.

Despite changes in leadership and broader shifts within the evangelical landscape, the organization's foundational emphasis on gospel-centered ministry, biblical authority, and Reformed theology continues to shape its identity today.

For many evangelicals, the anniversary serves as a reminder not only of the rise of The Gospel Coalition itself, but also of the enduring influence of voices like Tim Keller and D. A. Carson on contemporary evangelical thought and ministry.
