The hip-hop world lost one of its founding voices this week.
Rob Base, the rapper known for his landmark 1988 song "It Takes Two" with DJ E-Z Rock, has died after a private battle with cancer. He was 59.
His real name was Robert Ginyard. Just days before his passing, he celebrated his 59th birthday, writing on Instagram: "Happy 59th Birthday to me. God thank you for allowing me to see another year." That post now carries a weight his fans are still processing.
His family confirmed the news through a statement on his official Instagram page: "Rob's music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world. Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten."
Who Was Rob Base?
Base was one half of the Harlem hip-hop duo Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock. Their 1988 chart-topper "It Takes Two" was a blend of hip-hop and house music that helped bring both genres into the mainstream. For a generation that grew up in the late 1980s and 1990s, that song was everywhere - at parties, on radio, in gyms, in memories.
Alongside E-Z Rock, who died in 2014 from complications of diabetes, Base was instrumental in cross-pollinating hip-hop and house music and bringing them to the mainstream in the 1980s. He continued performing and connecting with fans for decades after, never fully stepping away from the music that defined him.
A Life Well Lived
What stood out in the final days of Rob Base's life was not the accolades - it was the gratitude. A man who publicly thanked God for another year of life, who died surrounded by family, and whose team remembered him first as a father and friend before an artist.
That is a legacy worth honoring regardless of genre.
The hip-hop community, and anyone who has ever heard "It Takes Two" light up a room, will feel this loss. Rest in peace, Rob Base. May 18, 1967 - May 22, 2026.
